What is classical music?

Classical music is a general term for music that has its roots in European musical history, from the Middle Ages to the present day. Think of composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms, but also contemporary composers who continue to build upon that tradition. Classical music takes many forms: from intimate chamber music (music written for a small group of musicians) to large-scale operas and impressive symphonies.

The North Netherlands Orchestra primarily performs symphonic music —that is, music for a full symphony orchestra: with strings, winds, percussion, and sometimes vocals or a choir. Symphonic music isn’t just “classical”; it’s incredibly diverse. For example, in addition to masterpieces by Mozart or Mahler, the NNO also performs film scores, new compositions, world music, and collaborations with artists from the worlds of pop, jazz, and even techno.

Through our programming, we showcase just how rich and diverse the symphonic repertoire is—and that it’s the perfect kind of music to experience live! In our concert calendar, you can filter by different types of concerts.
